What did a registration look like? 
When Samuel Martin re-registered 29 years later, his personal description was very different.
[after his height the register states that, “the end of the thumb on his right hand cut off   a large scar at the corner of his right eye, one on the upper lip and
 one near the corner of the left eye just over the eye brow, and several smaller scars on his left hand all the above scars were occasioned by blasting rock”]
The table that follows abstracts information from the entire Goochland Register into the following categories:  
id – This is a unique number for each person.  If, for example, the children of a woman are listed in her registration, the children will also have the mother's registration number but, in addition, will have a unique id number (or primary key) and row entry.  In relational databases primary keys can be linked between different tables so that a search can pull information from a number of tables.
pg – is simply the page number in the Goochland Register on which a registration was recorded.  If a registration spans two pages, the page number will always reference the page on which the entry of the registration begins.
num – is the registration number for an entry. The numbers in this register are mostly sequential and if there is any deviation it will be mentioned in the comment field.
reg_dmy – is the day-month-year entry for when the registration was entered by the clerk.  It is usually followed by another entry giving the date the registration was certified by another justice.  The certification date is not included in this table.
name – includes the first name and any middle names or initials of a registered person. It can also include suffixes, like Sr or Jr, following a comma and appended to the given name(s).
surname – is the surname of the person who was registered.  Sometimes no surnames were recorded for former slaves. A surname is recorded if the person is identified as "John, alias John Doe." This will be noted in the comment field.  If the surname for a person without one in this register is encountered in another document, it will be used in the surname field and the source documented with an entry in the comment field.  Married women were sometimes recorded with an alias, as in "Jane Doe, alias Jane Smith" or as "Jane Doe, now Smith".  In every case the aim is to enter the surname that was used at the time the register was entered.
complexion - This term is used in the registrations to characterize skin color.  There are many multiple registrations and it is possible that the color of a person could vary, although generally information in older registrations appears to have been copied word-for-word into re-registrations.  This field can also contain entries that go beyond skin color by implying ethnicity.  This is particularly true when the term "mulatto" is used as a qualifier for skin color.
age - is either the age given in the registration or an age calculated for the date of the current registration based upon the age and date recorded in an older registration from another county.  The intention is that the date of birth or year of birth should be equal to (reg_dmy - age).  If a date or month of birth is given, the age is almost always given as being determined from the "next" or "last" occurrence of that month, in other words, whether the person has already had a birthday, or will have a birthday.  Sometimes ages are given in as a pair of numbers, i.e., 37 or 38 years.  If so, the lower number was always entered (which is how we all want to calculate our age).  If a date range is given, say "50 to 60 years old", or between two non-sequential numbers, the lower number was entered, but the range will be recorded in the comment field.
sex - binary: either m or f
birth - records the birth status of a person, either born free or born a slave.  The field is blank for people formerly enslaved and recorded as "free" only if so stated. There is one example of a free person from Chesterfield who came to Goochland with a registration that said born free, but who had an earlier registration in Chesterfield recording his emancipation.  This was entered as "free", to reflect the information in the registration, but the comment field documents this exception.
eman_by - is the name of the person or court that emancipated the former slave.  The comment field states whether emancipation was by will or by deed and if there were any qualifications, such as an age at which emancipation was to take place.  If emancipated by decree, this field gives the court named in the registration. However, it is important to note that there were many people that registered in Goochland who received their freedom through the largest legal case involving emancipation in U.S. history, Pleasants v. Pleasants.  The clerks recorded these emancipations in a variety of ways: sometimes as by the Court of Appeals, or by the High Court of Chancery, or in the names of the individuals who held these people as their chattel property.  The documentation in Pleasants v. Pleasants gives the age or date of birth for almost all those emancipated and an effort is currently being made to update this table so that it includes this information along with hyperlinks to sources.
eman_dmy - records the date of emancipation which can be either the date of a will or deed, or the date it was recorded.  The date used in this field is taken from the registration or if determined from other documentation, enter in brackets [date].  Sometimes the date at which a person was freed was specified as being at an age.  No effort was made to calculate a projected date of emancipation.  However, every effort was made to give the "term of service" in the comment field so that emancipation can be calculated based on this restriction.
eman_place - is the county or city where the manumitting deed or will was recorded.  A place is not given for court decrees because a case may be tried in multiple jurisdictions with varying results.  However, final decrees above circuit courts were probably in Richmond for cases that originated in Goochland or, as with Pleasants v. Pleasants, in Henrico County.
height - given in feet and inches, but feel free to make a metric conversion if you wish.
description - is the listing of identifying scars or marks on the head, face or hands, but can go beyond that.  In the early Goochland registrations there was a tendency to characterize hair, whether straight or curly, but this practice became less frequent by the 1820s.  The Goochland clerks had a penchant for identifying the causes of some marks.  It is surprising how many scars there were from burns.  One person had a scar that was half way round the right eye from the kick of a horse.  Another had a finger mashed by a cart wheel and yet another had scars on the hand caused by the teeth of a saw. Although not universally informative, these occasional intimate glimpses into the lives of free people of color inform our understanding of how they lived and what they endured.
comments - provide a catch-all for information gleaned from registrations that does fit any of the categories stipulated by statute.  In Goochland this frequently includes a date of birth, which are uncommon on registrations in neighboring counties.  Parents of registering free people of color are frequently given in Fluvanna registrations, but are rare except for a few enslaved parents in Goochland.  The county of birth is included in Goochland registrations after 1850 and recorded in the comments field.  These culd possibly serve as one source of information for the migration of free people of color in Virginia.  If there was a prior registration for a person in Chesterfield County, the number of the prior registration was entered along with the current registration number.  The clerk in Fluvanna County noted if a registration was a request for a renewal, but did not record the number or date of the earlier registration.  As with Goochland, prior registrations were not recorded in Powhatan, Albemarle, Louisa, or Henrico counties.  Because of their importance in tracking life histories, the numbers for prior Goochland registrations were entered into the comments field in this table with the Reg# notation.  As Sarah Nerney observes, enforcement of laws was local and so inconsistent as to appear to be by whim of local magistrates.  Albemarle County has a fat file of registrations from other counties carried by those migrating to Albemarle so that they could prove their free status.  The same papers were received by the Goochland clerk but we learn in the register that they were burned after the registration was recorded in the Goochland register.  In Albemarle registrations were usually recorded in the court order or minute books.  A few are even found in deed books. Albemarle never had a book for registrations like Goochland and many other counties.
This description of the fields in this table covers some, but not all of the information that has been extracted from the Goochland Register of Free Negroes.  At this point in the organization of these data the only way to search for information is to use the <CTRL> F function in your browser and enter a search term in the window at the bottom of your browser.  Work is now underway to provide a pull-down window that will allow a user to select a field to search and an adjacent text box where a search term can be entered.  Another envisioned update is the addition of tables for indentures of apprenticeship, annual lists of free people of color, annual personal property tax data, and marriage records for free people in Goochland.  In the meantime, perhaps the best way to explore Goochland’s population of free people is to use Paul Heinegg’s website, “Free African Americans of Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Maryland, and Delaware.”  (http://www.freeafricanamericans.com/)
